New year, new inspiration, new knitting designs!

So, how many wip projects did you bring into the new year? If you are like me, there are at least some two or three that you actually know about and have somewhere in your vicinity, and then, there might be a few other ones that you’ve either put aside because you’re still brooding before getting ready to unravel it, or plainly, because you forgot about them.

If I was a reasonable and responsible adult, I would tell you to Marie Kondo it and clean it all out, either finish them or unravel them if you don’t like them anymore. But I’m not. For me, I have the same situation for yarn as I have for books. I will need different books and knitting projects for different moods, energy levels and periods of my life. Also, I want to be sure to have them around “just in case” I desperately need just that exact read or knitting project. So you could say, that I’m just being very well prepared for life, right?

So, back to knitdesigns… well last year turned out to be a rather productive year, with 6 knitting patterns published over the year. And although I’m still extraordingly bad at launching the right garments for the right seasons, or simply having some kind of designing strategy, I do have a few projects in my drawer … And to be fair to myself, it’s not like I haven’t tried to be more strategy about this whole knitdesign business, but if there’s one lesson learned for me from last year, well it was that treating it too much like a job, is just stressing me out (read all about my slight knitdesign burnout here) and cutting out all the fun and joy for me. So yes, my way of working right now is slightly chaotic and messy, but I’m just going with my flow of inspiration and moods, and winging it in a way…

What will 2026 have in store for you and me?

Probably the first knitting designs on the to-do list will be my black cardigan (that still has no buttons, shame on me!) which I thought was a rather imperfect design, but since I’ve been wearing it so much, I guess it is worth ironing out the small errors and finishing it up.

Next up, a simple asymmetrical shawl, because, well, you can never have enough shawls, right? Anyway, the schematics are already there, the instructions also somewhere on a file or in a notebook. I guess the hardest part will be to locate the notes and get down to decipher them…

Finally, there’s the slipover I quickly designed with the Snaeldan yarn I purchased a year earlier in Iceland. I love the cable pattern that I used for it, and I love the yarn. I’m still thinking about whether the design itself is as ideal as it could be. But the cable pattern is definitely a keep as is the yarn, which is gorgeously soft and perfect for cables …

Oh, and I almost forgot, I started a fun shawl with Myak’s Tibetan Cloud yarn, from the colour Dahlia (it’s between orange and coral coloured. my definition of a dream.)

And among the really vague ideas is a kid’s version of the Teddy Sweater, because I think this would be a perfect kids’ sweater (fluffy, teddy-like, what’s not to love?). Also, some kind of scarf using Gepard Garn’s My fine wool combined with Mohair, because I fell in love with that yarn blend when I knit a winter version of the Lilac Top for Woolinspires. And I thought that it would make brilliantly for a simple, elegant, straight scarf, with maybe a tiny little bit of lace or cabled detail at the edges. The idea’s not quite ripe yet… but of, course, I bought the yarn already because, well, you never know when inspiration might hit…

Here’s to another year full of yarn, mohair fluff, lost knitting project bags and a growing yarn stash!

Happy knitting!
