The gauge and needle size used for this pattern are only an indication and don’t need to fit perfectly. Just make sure that the yarn you have chosen works well with the checkered pattern, and preferably swatch the yarn beforehand in order to adjust the needle size, if needed, for the best outcome. You will see indications for both sport weight and fingering weight yarn yardage needed above, and you can of course adapt the size of your Dancing Dices triangle shawl by either adding pattern blocks or reducing them.
