Provence Shawl

The Provence shawl is a simple triangle shawl, with regular increases on one side only, thus creating an asymmetric shape. The lace pattern grows gradually throughout the shawl, starting with smaller simple eyelets, growing into diagonal lines and finally diamond shaped patterns with bobbles at the center.

 

The pattern is suited for a large range of yarn options, from warmer blends, such as for example wool and alpaca or baby yak, to lighter options, such as cotton. You can either opt to knit the shawl in one colour throughout the developing lace pattern, or on the other hand to change colours from one lace pattern block to the next. Both options are illustrated in the shawls above and throughout the pattern. The model shown above measures 160 x 120 cm (63 x 47”), but you can of course adapt it as you wish, by making the pattern blocks shorter or longer, depending on your preference.

One size: 160 x 120 cm (63 x 47”)

YARN

1 thread 4-ply or sports weight yarn. Other yarn weights are possible, but will of course have an impact on the size of the shawl, as well as the yardage needed.

For any yarn fitting the indicated weight and gauge, and by following the pattern, you will need 1390 m //1520 yds

 

Yarn usage for plain, one-coloured version:

Erika Knight Local Wool (100% virgin wool) – colour “rosedale pale link”: 3 skeins

Holst Titicaca (100 % alpaca) – colour “heather rose”: 3 skeins

Both yarns are held together. Total yardage for each thread: 1390 m // 1520 yds

MYak Baby Yak Lace (100% baby yak) – colour lazy day, yarn held double: 8 skeins

Onion knit Fino (50% merino wool, 50% organic cotton), 155 m / 186 yds // 50 g

C1 (yellow – 522): 1 skein – 150 m / 210 yds

C2 (pink – 533): 2 skeins – 210 m / 230 yds

C3 (blue –537): 2 skeins – 270 m / 290 yds

C4 (white – 501): 3 skeins – 340 m / 370 yds

C5 (blue-grey – 508): 3 skeins – 420 m / 460 yds

NEEDLES & MATERIALS

3.5 mm (US 4) circular needles, 60 – 80 cm (24-32”) in length

10 x 10 cm (4 x 4”) = 22 sts x 30 rows in stockinette stitch on 3.5 mm (US 4) needle

The gauge and needle size used for this pattern are only an indication and don’t need to fit perfectly. Just make sure that the yarn you have chosen works well with a lace pattern, and preferably swatch the yarn beforehand in order to adjust the needle size, if needed, for the best outcome, especially in regards to the lace pattern.
